Brazil 2022: Brazilian Sleep Association | Brazilian Sleep Association, Brazilian Sleep Medicine Association and Brazilian Association of Sleep Dentistry

Delegate: Brazilian Sleep Association

Affiliation: Brazilian Sleep Association, Brazilian Sleep Medicine Association and Brazilian Association of Sleep Dentistry

Short Bio: The Brazilian Sleep Association (ABS) aims to develop a myriad of multidisciplinary actions for promoting the Science of Sleep including the technical support and scientific development of its members, through the promotion of courses, weekly webinars, symposia, colloquiums and our traditional National Meeting (Congresso Brasileiro do Sono).

ABS is recognized worldwide. Our Society has a rich interaction of biologists, polysomnography technicians, physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychologists, physical educators, dentists and doctors. We are proud to have the Brazilian Association of Sleep Medicine (ABMS) and Brazilian Association of Sleep Dentistry (ABROS) on board for managing all aforementioned areas in a very collaborative way.

Our Society has a strong commitment to disseminate scientific knowledge. We strong believe that effective communication with the civil society and public policy managers are crucial for promoting a constant dialogue with society highlighting the importance of sleep education, sleep equity and wide access for treating sleep disorders. In addition, we are continuously encouraging an environment of Science development. Our indexed Journal (Sleep Science) is not only a home for the Brazilian research but also for several groups overseas. Some Brazilian researchers are renowned in their field.

Activity: Since 2014, ABS decided for not limiting its actions in one day but in one week (called “Semana do Sono”). Thanks to the commitment of several health professionals from the 22 regional offices of our Country, we are conducting hundreds of actions directly reaching thousands of people with high scientific content about sleep using a clear and effective communication.

In 2022, the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 drove again our decision for a virtual campaign (with some face-to-face activities following standard COVID-19 protocols). We opted to invest mainly in social networks (https://www.instagram.com/absono/; https://www.facebook.com/associacaobrasileiradosono; https://twitter.com/abssono; https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwjOMn0YQGapmt7hjMdbcIQ; https://br.linkedin.com/in/associa%C3%A7%C3%A3o-brasileira-do-sono-abs-552b11180) and both national and local media for reaching the population and health professionals’ attention to the importance of sleep. Particularly, we explored the impact of pandemic on the burden of several sleep disorders and comorbid conditions.

Briefly, the ABS’s schedule for the World Sleep Day 2022 comprised approximately 207 activities, including Lives, Webinars and Lectures/Scientific Activities. Our metrics revealed that 260,000 people were impacted by our activities not only in Brazil but also in some Countries in Latin America and Europe. Our program promoted a great dialogue with health professionals, researchers, educators, lay people and society discussing the importance of sleep. Several digital influencers approved by our Board (some of them with >3.000.000 followers) helped us to spread the main Word Sleep Society 2022 message (“Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World”).

Actions scheduled for 2022:

– Videos “Gotas de Sono” (Sleep drops): Sleep drops comprised short videos (from 30 seconds to 01 minute maximum) calling the attention for a specific topic in Sleep. The videos were published on social networks reaching more than 52,000 views;
