Activity: Tengiz Oniani Laboratory of Sleep-Wakefulness Study at Ilia State University, Tbilisi, Georgia, with support of Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medicine, organized several activities to celebrate World Sleep Day 2023 and promote sleep health.
A sleep awareness campaign has been developed by the partners of this application, based on the slogan “Sleep is Essential for Health”. Scientific evidence that during the COVID-19 pandemic young generations were at a higher risk to develop sleep and mental health problems, prompted to focus on students. Several lectures on the importance of sleep for health were delivered to students at Ilia State University, highlighting the importance of sleep hygiene, attitudes towards sleep, the prioritization of sleep behavior for mental and physical health, quality of life and safety.
Furthermore, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medicine, in collaboration with Tengiz Oniani Laboratory of Sleep-Wakefulness Study, initiated the student competition “Why is sleep so important for health anyway?” The information can be found at the following link: https://iliauni.edu.ge/en/iliauni/AcademicDepartments/sainjinro-fakulteti-270/siaxleebi-309/student-competition-why-is-sleep-so-important-for-health.page

Those who wished to participate in the competition, had to prepare a scientific essay on this issue and in case of selection by the Georgia World Sleep Day 2023 committee, hold a presentation on World Sleep Day, March 17, 2023. Students from all departments (bachelor, master and doctorate levels) were actively engaged in the competition. Twelve best essays were selected for presentations and for the second stage of the competition.
On March 17, we started the celebration of World Sleep Day with talks on the history and mission of World Sleep Day celebration, and on sleep health relationship. Then, students presented their works. There was a time for questions and answers, and most notably, students were actively engaged in the discussions. It was a great occasion for interaction between students, faculties and sleep professionals.

The Audience:
Students and Faculties from Ilia State University as well as other Universities, general public.

We have prepared certificates of participation at World sleep Day, 2023 for all selected students. In addition, all students received memorable souvenirs. As winners, it was a very difficult decision but eventually the World Sleep Day committee selected 3 essays.
