Short Bio: Established in 2008, OTARC was the first dedicated Autism research center in Australia. Its internationally recognized Autism research is making an impact not just in Australia but also globally. Our research aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to optimize impact for the Autistic and Autism community through industry collaborations, public accountability, community engagement and using local paths to global change. Our research encompasses four research program areas, including health and wellbeing, where we undertake our sleep research. Our vision is for a world where Autistic people, their families and their careers thrive.

Activity: OTARC’s blog article aims to illuminate the intricate relationship between Autism and sleep quality. Through comprehensive research, including studies by OTARC researchers, we delve into the challenges Autistic adults face in achieving restorative sleep each night. From difficulties falling asleep to circadian rhythm disruptions, we explore the multifaceted aspects of insomnia prevalent among Autistic adults.

The article aims to educate readers about:
1) the complex connections between sleep quality and mental health, particularly anxiety and depression.
2) the importance of recognizing sensory sensitivities and arousal patterns in understanding sleep difficulties among Autistic adults.
3) our collaboration with ACTUALISE Lab, which has co-developed innovative therapeutic approaches, such as ACT-i (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Insomnia), to treat insomnia and anxiety in Autistic adults effectively.

The article showcases OTARC’s commitment to promoting good sleep habits and psychological supports to enhance the quality of life for Autistic individuals. By providing resources and support networks, we aim to empower individuals to seek help and advocate for their sleep-related needs.
