Activity:
To increase public awareness about role of healthy sleep in their life, a press conference was organized with the main local media and IRIB news agency. We celebrated World Sleep Day at one of our sleep clinics.
The press conference was held in Iranian Center for Neurological Research, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Dr. Mohammad Hossein Harirchian (Professor of Neurology), Dr. Khosro Sadeghniiat Haghighi (Professor, Occupational Medicine and Sleep Medicine Specialist), Dr. Amin Amali (Associate professor, Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck surgery specialist), and Dr. Zahra Banafsheh Alemohammad (Assistant professor, Occupational Medicine and Sleep Medicine specialist), members of Iranian Sleep Medicine Society, delivered speeches at the conference. They talked about:

  • Normal sleep
  • Importance of sound sleep on health and productivity
  • Complications of poor sleep quality and different types of insomnia on quality of life and workplace productivity
  • Role of poor sleep quality and insomnia in seizure attacks
  • Restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy
  • Shift work associated sleep problems in the modern societies and road traffic accidents due to sleep disorders
  • Symptoms, signs and different treatments (surgical and non-surgical) of sleep apnea, cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of sleep apnea
  • Role of Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) and other methods in evaluation of upper airway before performing surgery for sleep apnea

Conference reporters also visited the sleep clinic of Iranian Center for Neurological Research to know more about main diagnostic test in sleep medicine (Polysomnography) and related equipment for treatment of sleep apnea such as CPAP.

Graduated fellows of sleep medicine also shared learning points with media about sleep disorders and their different preventive and therapeutic strategies. Dr. Farzaneh Chavoshi, Dr. Mojahede Salmani, Dr. Reihaneh Heidari, Dr. Arezu Najafi, and Dr. Ramin Niafar presented information about following subjects:
• Importance of complete medical evaluation by a qualified trained physician in the case of having sleep problem
• Insomnia
• Sleepiness and its associated traffic accidents
• Importance of screening and treatment of sleep apnea in drivers
• Jet lag and how to overcome the associated symptoms
• Parasomnia and therapeutic approaches

Dr. Sulmaz Arshi and Dr. Mehrdad Shakeri, current fellows of sleep medicine, also collaborated in providing a toolkit for the media to be presented for the public. The World Sleep Day was also celebrated at Baharloo sleep clinic with the attending sleep technicians.

Short Bio: Dr. Khosro Sadeghniiat Haghighi is an occupational medicine and sleep medicine specialist completed an educational course regarding sleep medicine in University of Toronto. He promoted sleep medicine in Iran in collaboration with Iranian Sleep Medicine Society. He established first sleep clinics (Baharloo Sleep clinic and Imam Sleep Lab) and Occupational Sleep Research Center at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He is also head of Environmental and Occupational Health Center, Ministry of Health and Medical Education, and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Sleep Sciences.
