Short Bio: The backdrop to the SLEEP & PSYCHE PROJECT 2019 (Progetto Sonno & Psiche 2019) aims at promoting the cultural perception about this topic, in the attempt to improve both diagnosis and prognosis of sleep-deprived patients suffering from psychiatric disorders, and provide the most appropriate treatment.

Activity: Lack of sleep and sleep disorders are often overlooked and undervalued, notwithstanding their high incidence and impact on the diagnosis and prognosis of possibly related psychiatric disorders. A healthy sleep involves an intense activity of the Central Nervous System and is crucial for the neuronal trophism and plasticity, a prerequisite for a normal brain function. Prolonged curtailment of sleep duration may favour the onset of psychiatric and somatic disorders, caused by disruption of the sleep macro- and microstructure and related brain activities, which result in important neurophysiological and endocrine alterations.

Findings from recent studies have demonstrated the close relationship between circadian rhythm, sleep disorders and comorbid conditions. These results have an impact not only within the field of sleep medicine, but also within the fields of psychiatry, dementia, neurology and cardio-metabolic diseases. In fact, it has been widely demonstrated that sleep deprivation increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (such as hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary heart disease and stroke), endocrine metabolic disorders (such as type 2 diabetes, obesity) and psychiatric conditions (namely major depression and anxiety disorders).

The message this course will be delivering is that insomnia and disruption of the sleep-wake cycle start a cascade of events that involve different organs, and may support for the possible etiopathogenic role in a wide range of disorders, such as psychiatric conditions, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. On the other hand, in insomnia associated with a mental illness, an appropriate treatment may have a positive impact on the underlying psychiatric condition and prevent relapses. Based on this evidence, the proper treatment of sleep disturbances may help protect the patient’s overall physical and mental health.

This is the backdrop to the SLEEP & PSYCHE PROJECT 2019 (Progetto Sonno & Psiche 2019), that aims at promoting the cultural perception about this topic, in the attempt to improve both diagnosis and prognosis of sleep-deprived patients suffering from psychiatric disorders, and provide the most appropriate treatment.

The course objectives can be summarized as follows:
a. establish the connection between sleep disorders, somatic symptoms and mental health, being the melatoninergic system the common background of chronobiotic effects;
b. define the use of exogenous melatonin, consistently with the physiological chronobiotic processes;
c. increase the level of therapeutic appropriateness in managing sleep disorders.
