Canada 2014: SCIENCE NORTH CAVERN: “THE SLEEPING HUMAN BRAIN: RESTFUL SLEEP, EASY BREATHING, HEALTHY BODY”

World Sleep Day in Sudbury on March 13, 2014 at Science North Cavern starting at 7:00 pm, will host Dr. Legault and Dr. Oliphant giving a presentation on the following.

The first 35 minutes will be a lecture given by Dr. Legault. Dr. Legault will discuss the human brain while it sleeps. Information to be provided will include the evolutionary component of sleeping behaviours including important neuroanatomical structures. Dr. Legault will explore the fundamentally different physiological states that give rise to the different stages of sleep, specifically slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Dr. Legault will conclude his lecture by bringing the sleep states and neuroanatomy together to describe how healthy sleeping behaviours contribute to improved mental and physical health during wakefulness. Dr. Legault will entertain questions from the audience for 10 minutes at the end of his lecture.

Dr. Oliphant will deliver the second lecture. His 35-minute lecture will include a review of the physical and mental consequences of an inadequate amount of sleep or sleep that is of poor quality. Dr. Oliphant will describe some of the most common sleep disorders and how they contribute to overall poor health. Dr. Oliphant will explain how sleep disorders can be treated and what the outcomes of such treatment might be. Dr. Oliphant will conclude his lecture with some medical advice regarding practices that promote healthy sleep. Dr. Oliphant will then open the floor to the audience for questions.
