USA 2014: DR. TODD MORGAN

Say Ahhh to Get More Zzzzzzzz SAN DIEGO, CA  February 24, 2014 – Healthy teeth, healthy gums and now…healthy sleep?  Are you keeping up your partner with a snore that makes the neighbors call? Dr. Todd Morgan, DMD, who graduated from the prestigious Washington University School of Dental Medicine, has been in practice for over 25 years in Encinitas, California. He is the leading expert in dental sleep medicine, has conducted clinical research trials and published a number of scientific articles regarding the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring with oral appliance therapy (OAT).  One of his first patients was his own father, whose transformation from a snoring and grumpy disciplinarian into a man offering to help you with life’s troubles was nothing short of miraculous. Dr. Morgan was sold immediately, and forever. “I have created a practice that improves the quality of peoples’ lives, their relationships, and helps them feel younger. I have helped so many people now along the way that I will never stop, and want everyone in San Diego to have the chance to experience the benefits of great sleep.”

Sleep Solutions of San Diego

On February 28, 2014, Dr. Morgan will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:00pm at his new practice, Sleep Solutions of San Diego with top physicians and community leaders such as Former Mayor Jerry Sanders and ResMed Corp. Founder, Chairman and CEO Dr. Peter Farrell.  This downtown location caters to the growing segment of dentistry that focuses on managing snoring and sleep apnea with OAT.  OAT is an effective alternative to the standard continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask. According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), up to 50% of sleep apnea patients do not comply with or tolerate CPAP. Dr. Morgan prides himself on offering the most innovative solutions to his patients. He uses his vast knowledge and resources to customize solutions for each patient, and partners with the top manufacturers’ in the industry, such as San Diego-based ResMed Corp. Patients often ask their sleep practitioner about natural and self-help solutions for snoring and OSA. This prompted Dr. Morgan to develop and patent the pharyngeal training appliance (PTA) which offers a convenient way for patients to perform targeted exercise and tone the muscles that maintain airway function. “A limited number of investigations have now been published that demonstrate pharyngeal exercise can decreases sleep apnea and snoring. The PTA provides patients with an easy and convenient way the properly perform the targeted exercises.”

Risks of the Disease

According to the AADSM, at least 18 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea, which causes them to stop breathing hundreds of times a night for anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute. 80% of people with sleep apnea go undiagnosed which is potentially life threatening.  This condition can increase the risk for serious health problems from congestive heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease to diabetes, obesity, depression and impotence if left untreated.  Children with undiagnosed sleep apnea have a harder time focusing at school, and suffer from behavioral problems.  .

There is Hope

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) recommends oral appliance therapy for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Once a patient is diagnosed with primary snoring or obstructive sleep apnea by a board-certified sleep physician, a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine can provide treatment with OAT.  Dr. Morgan warns that not all dentist sleep medicine experts are the same.  “Taking one weekend on-line course on oral appliance therapy and sleep apnea doesn’t deem you an expert in the field.  I encourage patients to visit my facility, ask me questions, and discuss what solutions are available to them”.  His motto at Sleep Solutions of San Diego is: Sleep Better Tonight for a Better Tomorrow. For those who have never consulted a dentist about treatments for sleep apnea and snoring, it may be time to make an appointment.
