Viet Nam 2026: Professor Sy Duong-Quy – President of Vietnam Society of Sleep Medicine – VSSM

Delegate: Professor Sy Duong-Quy – President of Vietnam Society of Sleep Medicine – VSSM

Delegate Short Bio: Since the establishment of the Vietnam Sleep Medicine Society (VSMS) on December 10, 2019, Prof. Dr. Sci. Duong Quy Sy, as its President, has played a central role in advancing sleep medicine in Vietnam through education, research, innovation, and policy development. He and the Society’s experts have trained and certified more than 600 healthcare professionals nationwide in polysomnography, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, and pediatric sleep disorders. He has led numerous multicenter and national studies on the prevalence and impact of OSA and insomnia, particularly among healthcare workers and patients with cardiometabolic diseases, with findings presented at regional and international conferences. These research results have provided the scientific foundation for advising the Ministry of Health on national sleep health strategies and for integrating sleep medicine training into medical and health sciences universities across the country.
In early March 2026, in celebration of “World Sleep Day”, Prof. Duong Quy Sy and the leadership of the Vietnam Sleep Medicine Society obtained official approval from the Ministry of Health to incorporate fundamental sleep medicine into the national competency standards for general medical doctor training. In addition, he has led technological innovation and intellectual property development, including smart drowsiness-detection cameras for drivers, a free community sleep health application (SleepCare VSSM), binaural beat–based sleep improvement protocols, smart sleep-monitoring headphones, and the design of a low-cost smart CPAP device developed in Vietnam, while supervising more than 10 doctoral candidates in sleep medicine.

At the global level, Prof. Dr. Duong Quy Sy has contributed significantly to strengthening international collaboration and strategic action in sleep health. In early 2026, he founded the Global Initiative for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Care (GIFOSA) and the Global Initiative for Insomnia Care (GIFIN) in partnership with leading experts from more than 30 countries in the world. These initiatives aim to establish coordinated global strategies to address OSA and insomnia—conditions affecting billions of people—while promoting the sharing of professional expertise in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, particularly for low-resource countries. Through these efforts, he has helped position Vietnam as an active and responsible contributor to the advancement of sleep medicine regionally and globally, promoting equitable access to sleep health care worldwide.
