Short Bio: Pr. Sy Duong-Quy, MD, PhD is a current President of Vietnam Society of Sleep Medicine (VSSM) (mandates of 2020-2025 and 2025-2030). VSSM has been established in December 2019 after receiving the Decision of Ministry of Home Affairs.
After 5 years, VSSM has established 16 different attached associations which have been based in different cities and provinces of Vietnam and jointed with different medical specialties, including Hanoi Association of Sleep Medicine, Northern Coast Region of Sleep Medicine, Thai Binh Association of Sleep Medicine, Center Region of Sleep Medicine, HCM City Association of Sleep Medicine, Mekong River Association of Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Association of Insomnia, Vietnam Association of Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Vietnam Jointed Association of Immuno-Allergology and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Traditional Medicine and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Nursing and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Nutrition and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Sound Therapy and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Respiratory Diseases and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Jointed Association of Cardiology and Sleep Medicine, and Vietnam Association of Sleep Medicine Technologists. Currently, VSSM has more than 800 members who work in different specialties of medicine.
Especially, in 2024, VSSM has a big honor to have Pr. Thomas Penzel – President-Elect of WSS – and Pr. Francis Martin – President of AFVP – as Honor Presidents of VSSM.
VSSM owns the accreditation of sleep medicine training given by Ministry of Health since April 2022 (ID: B86). After that time, VSSM has trained nearly 500 healthcare workers (physicians, nurses, technologists…) with the training program of 6 weeks (Technique of PSG – 240 training hours), 3 months (Diagnosis and Treatment of OSA: 480 training hours), 6 months (Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult Sleep Disorders: 960 training hours). The 9 months program will be opened in 2025 (Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disorders in Children and adult: 1,920 training hours). During 5 last years, Pr. Sy Duong-Quy and VSSM have done 20 polysomnography and respiratory polygraphy to 20 public hospitals in Vietnam; did the Screening OSA Campagne for 2,000 healthcare workers with 500 respiratory polygraphy done freely; and done the OSA screening program fo patients with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension with 2,000 respiratory polygraphy has been done freely in 2024 – 2025. VSSM is now waiting for the final Decision of Ministry of Health for supporting the World Sleep Day and celebrating Vietnam Sleep Day every year in March 15th.
Activity: In 2025, VSSM uses the Slogan of WSS “Make Sleep Health a Priority” to be a title and objective of all activities for celebrating World Sleep day in March 14 and in the year of 2025. The main activities of VSSM which have been planed to do in World Sleep Day:
1. Doing the online and at place Conferences about “the Impact of Sleep Disorders on Global and Individual Health” in different regions of Vietnam.
2. Organizing the conferences to promote and make “Sleep Health a Priority” during the meeting of Vietnam Joined Association of Cardiology and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Joined Association of Respirology and Sleep Medicine, Vietnam Association of Sleep Medicine Technologists.
3. Doing the Campaign entitled “Make Sleep Health a Priority” with 300 volunteer medical students in 5 different provinces in Vietnam for giving the brochure of OSA to the high risk community of OSA, and patients at risk.
4. Inaugurating the national survey of insomnia and the Vietnamese guideline of Diagnosis and Treatment of Insomnia in Adult.
5. Celebrating the World Sleep Day with the Songs about Sleep in multilanguage (Vietnamese, English, French, Chinese) done by Pr. Sy Duong-Quy-the poet and compositor. Here is the song “Dreaming Sleep” composed in 2024 by Sy Duong-Quy:
6. Introducing the VSSM-SleepCare Application (Google Play) to the international community. This application created by Pr. Sy Duong-Quy which has been integrated 2,000 standardized questions – answers about sleep and more with open chatbot and AI with deep learning. VSSM-SleepCare owns all sleep evaluation and sleep-related disorder tools, all accredited SleepLab in Vietnam, and the sleep physicians network of Vietnam who get WSS Diploma of International Specialist of Sleep Disorder (43 physicians) and have VSSM Certificate of Sleep Medicine (9 months program).
