Short Bio: Soda Kuczkowski is a Sleep Health Educator and Certified Sleep Coach who has passionately worked in the field of clinical and behavioral sleep medicine and sleep health for the past 14 years. She is the founder of START WITH SLEEP, an organization that serves as a community resource for sleep health advocacy by providing programming and trainings for medical professionals, schools and corporate wellness initiatives, as well as hosts a retail boutique of curated sleep tools. She provides global seminars, sleep consulting as well as sleep coaching services. She is certified in maternity, child and adult sleep health.

Activity: Sleep is essential to good health, both mental and physical well-being. A Ball State University study conducted in 2008 concluded that on average 43% of teachers get less than 6 hours of sleep per night. Furthermore that 64% of educators are drowsy during school hours. Not sleeping long or well enough puts teachers at risk for sleep deprivation. Fortunately, school districts are now beginning to understand that supporting the social and emotional well-being and resilience of their teachers and staff is critical for creating a positive school climate, retaining quality educators and preventing burnout. Sleep should be an important part of wellness programs in schools to help build a culture of health that benefits everyone in the school community. Educators who are well-rested also set the example to help students learn habits that can extend good practices into the home. This World Sleep Day 2021, I will be providing education for the staff at the Clevehill school district for their staff development day on the importance of sleep for managing and maintaining overall health, providing insight as to the most common factors that can compromise sleep and the best ways to improve the quality of how well they sleep.
