Activity: Royal London Hospital Children’s Sleep Service Celebrates World Sleep Day 2026: Sleep Well, Live Better
The Children’s Sleep Service at The Royal London Hospital celebrated World Sleep Day 2026 with a lively and engaging drop-in event that brought together children, families, and hospital colleagues to highlight the importance of healthy sleep.
Held at the hospital entrance, the event embraced this year’s global theme, “Sleep Well, Live Better,” encouraging visitors to reflect on their own sleep habits while learning simple, practical ways to improve sleep health.
How Well Did You Sleep Last Night?
One of the most interactive elements of the day invited participants to answer a simple but powerful question:
“How well did you sleep last night?”
Visitors placed their responses on a colour-coded board, creating an instant snapshot of sleep experiences across the hospital community:
🟢 Green – Slept well: 73 responses
🟡 Yellow – Okay sleep: 18 responses
🔴 Red – Poor sleep: 11 responses
This activity sparked thoughtful conversations between families and the sleep team about bedtime routines, screen time, sleep environments, and the importance of good sleep for both children and adults. The visual display provided a powerful reminder that sleep health affects everyone.
Creativity and Learning for Children
Children attending the event had great fun taking part in the “Design Your Own Sleep Mask” activity. With colourful pens, stickers, and plenty of imagination, they created personalised sleep masks while learning how a dark, calm environment can support better sleep.
The activity was a favourite among younger visitors, many proudly showing off their creative designs before taking them home.
A Day of Fun, Smiles, and Engagement
The event created a welcoming space where children, parents, and hospital staff could learn about sleep in a relaxed and enjoyable way. The fun and wacky photobooth was a highlight, with families and colleagues posing with playful sleep-themed props and sharing plenty of laughter throughout the day.
Many staff members passing through the hospital entrance stopped to join the activities, ask questions, and take part in the sleep survey — further reinforcing that sleep health is relevant to all ages.
Promoting Sleep as a Pillar of Health
The Children’s Sleep Service team used the event to promote sleep as a fundamental pillar of health and wellbeing, alongside nutrition and physical activity. Through interactive displays and informal discussions, families gained practical tips to improve sleep routines at home and better recognise signs of sleep-disordered breathing.
Consent and Safeguarding
To ensure privacy and safeguarding, all photographs taken during the event were captured only from participants who had provided signed consent forms. This enabled the team to share the success of the day while respecting the privacy and wishes of families.
Bringing the Community Together
The event highlighted the strong community spirit within The Royal London Hospital, demonstrating how awareness initiatives like World Sleep Day can bring together patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
With creative activities, meaningful conversations, and plenty of smiles, the celebration successfully reinforced an important message: Better sleep helps us live healthier, happier lives.
“World Sleep Day is a wonderful opportunity to talk about sleep in a way that is fun, engaging, and accessible for families. Seeing children enjoying the activities, creating their own sleep masks, and learning about healthy sleep habits was incredibly rewarding. Good sleep plays a vital role in children’s health, learning, and wellbeing — and events like this help us start important conversations about sleep within our community.” — Children’s Sleep Service
