Short Bio: Catriona is a PhD student and research assistant with the Complexity in Health Improvement Programme at the University of Glasgow MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit. Her research is focused on developing and evaluating complex interventions, with a focus on sleep and adolescent health.

Since graduating with a MA in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh and a MSc in Clinical Health Psychology from the University of Strathclyde, Catriona has explore the role of sleep in chronic illness, patient care, and intervention delivery. Catriona has worked with the University of Strathclyde Centre for Sleep Health to explore the delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia in school-based settings to improve adolescent sleep. Most recently, she has worked on the CLOCK OFF study with the University of Glasgow, using a peer influence approach to reduce night-time use of interactive electronic devices and social media among adolescents.

Catriona is increasingly using participatory and arts-based methods in her research and public engagement practices. Her PhD project used photovoice, where adolescents used photos to explore their sleep and ideas to promote healthy sleep. Photos from the project were then shared the wider community through school-based and local community exhibitions to raise awareness of sleep health from an adolescent-led perspective.

Catriona is aims to develop the use of arts-based methods to engage the community on the importance of sleep and to help put sleep on the public health agenda.

Activity: Prioritizing Sleep Health Through the Art of Zine Making

We are running an arts-based workshop to explore sleep through the creative medium of zines for staff, students, and the wider community at the University of Glasgow. Attendees will use collage, illustration, and storytelling to learn about the science of sleep, reflect on their sleep habits, and take time to prioritise their sleep health. Through hands-on zine-making, this workshop aims to foster dialogue about sleep health, factors that shape our sleep, and strategies to prioritise rest. Attendees will create their own sleepy zine, a self-published pocket sized magazine. The zines will then displayed at the university and used in other future engagement activities to promote sleep health awareness. No prior artistic experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore sleep in a new, creative way!
