Delegate: Volodymyr, Functional Diagnostics Physician, Rehabilitation Hospital in Central Ukraine in close collaboration with psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, and therapists.

Delegate Short Bio: Born in 1980 in Ukraine. Graduated from medical university in 2003. For the first 10 years after graduating from university, I worked as an emergency doctor, now I work as the head of the functional diagnostics department in a rehabilitation hospital. Activity: Sleep in Wartime: Interdisciplinary Team Restores Healthy Sleep for War-Injured Patients in Ukraine
For over four years, Ukraine has been living under constant Russian missile and drone attacks. Nighttime air raids, explosions, and chronic stress have become our daily reality. Many of our patients—wounded and traumatized individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder—suffer from severe sleep disorders: insomnia, nightmares, and sleep apnea. These problems significantly slow down their physical and neurological recovery.

As a functional diagnostician, I perform electrophysiological studies (ENMG, EEG, ECG, Holter monitoring, spirometry) every day. We recently received a new polysomnography (PSG) suite, and I have begun conducting full PSG examinations. PSG is the gold standard of sleep research: throughout the night, we attach safe sensors to record brain waves (4 stages of sleep), eye movements, breathing effort, oxygen levels, heart rate, and leg movements. This allows us to objectively document how war steals healthy sleep from those who need it most to heal.
On March 13, 2026, in close collaboration with psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, and therapists, I am organizing a 50-minute interdisciplinary educational event at our rehabilitation hospital on the following topics:

• neurobiology of stress and sleep (neurologist)
• the impact of war on sleep quality (neurologist + psychiatrist),
• a live demonstration of the new PSG system with an explanation of the sensors and what we see on the recordings (functional diagnostician),
• practical tools and methods for better sleep during air raids and enemy attacks (psychologist + therapist),
• a question and answer session with the entire team.
• an interactive session between doctors and patients.
Patients will also receive a simple handout, “5 Rules for Healthy Sleep in Wartime,” with clear instructions and information about the capabilities and importance of PSG.
Despite shelling, nighttime air raids, and limited resources, this team approach helps our patients better understand their sleep disorders and supports their recovery. We believe that healthy sleep is a vital part of rehabilitation, especially during wartime.
