On World Sleep Day 2026, Outlook Ukraine in partnership with Poltava State Medical University organized a free public online lecture titled “Sleep Well — Live Better.” The event brought together certified sleep specialists from Ukraine and the United States to provide evidence-based, accessible information on sleep health to a Ukrainian audience living under wartime conditions.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Anastasiia Shkodina (MD, PhD, neurologist, somnologist, somno-therapist, Assistant Professor at Poltava State Medical University, member of the World Sleep Society, graduate of the World Sleep Academy), with an opening address by Dr. Lourdes DelRosso (MD, PhD, Professor at UC San Francisco–Fresno, Medical Director for Sleep Medicine at Inspire Health Medical Group, Co-Chair of the World Sleep Day Committee, World Sleep Society).
The lecture covered an 8-step guide from sleep neurobiology to practical survival strategies, including: the two-process model of sleep regulation (homeostasis and circadian rhythms), sleep architecture (N1, N2, N3, REM stages), consequences of chronic sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health, metabolism, immunity, emotional regulation and cognitive function, classification of over 80 sleep disorders according to ICSD-3, evidence-based diagnosis and treatment approaches (polysomnography, actigraphy, CBT-I, somno-therapy), and wartime-specific strategies — how to fall asleep after an air raid alert, manage nighttime awakenings, and maintain functioning despite sleep disruption.
A live Q&A session followed the lecture, during which participants asked questions about children’s sleep disorders, nighttime awakenings, supplement safety, and anxiety-related insomnia.
