Scope of Activity: Enduring program
Activity: Turkish Neurological Society Sleep Medicine Working Group; World Sleep Day, March 13, 2026: “Sleep Well, Live Better”
Every night when we turn off the lights, we do not actually shut down the world, but only our consciousness. While we think we are sleeping, our brain continues to work. In fact, from a neurological perspective, sleep is one of the times when the brain works the hardest. This is precisely why World Sleep Day reminds us of a simple truth: A good night’s sleep is the foundation of a good life.
One of the greatest misconceptions of the modern era is that sleep is “disposable” time. We have become a society that sacrifices sleep in the name of working harder, being more productive, or not missing out on social life. Yet, neuroscience sends us a very clear message: Sleep is not dispensable; it is an irreplaceable biological necessity.
The health of the brain begins at night. The neural connections established during sleep, the metabolic waste being cleared, and the biological rhythms being rebalanced determine who we are when we wake up in the morning. Time allocated to sleep is not a loss of productivity; it is the cornerstone of mental clarity.
This World Sleep Day, give yourself a small but powerful gift: Change your priorities, not just your alarm. Because a good night’s sleep does not only mean a better night; it means a better brain and a better life.
“Sleep well, live better.”
In this context, our working group aims to pioneer the establishment of a National Sleep Network during this webinar, by fostering a powerful collaboration between two major national organizations: the Turkish Neurological Society and the Turkish Sleep Medicine Society.
The meeting will feature in-depth discussions on the definition of quality sleep, the journey ‘from the brain to the city,’ the concept of ‘sleep and healthy cities,’ and the multifaceted impacts of permanent daylight saving time vs. standard time on public health. Once again, we will underscore a vital truth: healthy sleep is an absolute prerequisite for a healthy life.
