Taiwan 2026: Yen-Chin Chen

Delegate: Yen-Chin Chen

Delegate Short Bio: Dr. Yen-Chin Chen is a nurse scientist specializing in sleep medicine and gerontological nursing. Her work focuses on nurse-led assessment and behavioral interventions for insomnia and sleep-related breathing disorders, as well as on the links between sleep, oral function, and frailty in older adults. She collaborates across clinical, community, and technology sectors to translate evidence into scalable healthy ageing programs and education. Her research emphasizes the feasibility of implementation, patient-centered outcomes, and interdisciplinary innovation in aging care.

Scope of Activity: Individual activity

Activity: To promote sleep health awareness among young adults, we organized a series of educational and interactive activities in conjunction with World Sleep Day 2026 at the university level. The initiative targeted undergraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds, many of whom experience irregular sleep schedules, academic stress, and extensive use of digital devices, all of which negatively affect sleep quality.

1. Sleep Health Education Session

The program began with an evidence-based lecture introducing the biological foundations of sleep and its role in health and well-being. Students were introduced to the three core components of sleep regulation, including circadian rhythm regulation, homeostatic sleep drive, and behavioral/environmental influences.

The lecture emphasized the relationships among sleep, cognitive performance, emotional regulation, immune function, and long-term health outcomes. Particular attention was given to common sleep problems among university students, such as delayed sleep phase, excessive screen exposure, irregular sleep schedules, and stress-related insomnia.

The goal of this session was to increase sleep health literacy and help students recognize sleep as a critical pillar of health, on par with nutrition and physical activity.

2. Interactive Group Learning Activities

Following the educational session, students participated in small-group collaborative learning activities designed to translate knowledge into practical strategies.

Each group created visual posters illustrating key sleep concepts, such as: sleep stages and sleep architecture, circadian rhythm regulation, sleep hygiene strategies, and the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and sleep quality.

Students presented their work to peers, encouraging discussion and reinforcing understanding through peer teaching. This approach was intended to strengthen active learning, knowledge retention, and collaborative engagement.

3. Community Awareness and Advocacy

As part of the World Sleep Day initiative, students documented their learning and created visual materials promoting sleep health awareness. These materials were displayed during the activity and shared within the university community to stimulate broader conversations about healthy sleep habits.

This component aimed to empower students as sleep health ambassadors, encouraging them to share sleep knowledge with their peers and families.
