Delegate: Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia (SPP)
Delegate Short Bio: The Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia – SPP purpose is to promote and protect the respiratory health of the Portuguese and to encourage education and professional qualification through the dissemination of all the subjects related to respiratory diseases. In particular, our Working Committee on Sleep Respiratory Pathology intends to inform the Portuguese people about the importance of sleep, in general health and well-being.
Scope of Activity: Campaign
Activity: This year, the campaign by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia (SPP) for World Sleep Day was carried out under the slogan “Champion’s Sleep.” In line with the global theme – “Sleep well, live better” – we developed this campaign to showcase the inspiring results we can achieve when we sleep well. The idea was to highlight the importance of sleep as a pillar of health and as an essential factor in achieving high-level physical and mental performance.
To meet this goal, testimonials were gathered from several athletes who shared how they incorporate sleep into their routines as champions. Portuguese athletes from individual sports, such as judo, athletics, cycling, and swimming, as well as team sports, such as rugby and canoeing, took part.
All messages were shared on SPP’s social media through a video featuring all the athletes (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DV0tBIkkQg6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==), as well as individual videos in which each athlete shared what it means to have a “champion’s sleep.” The month of March was especially dedicated to this theme.
The fact that this campaign included a wide range of athletes from different disciplines, with the support of the Olympic Athletes Commission, made it possible not only to reach more people, but also to demonstrate that the importance of sleep is universal across all areas, as it should be in everyone’s daily lives.
Patrícia Sampaio (judo), Pedro Afonso (sprinting), Diogo Abreu and Pedro Ferreira (trampoline), Gustavo Gonçalves (canoeing), Afonso Costa (rowing), Mariana Machado (athletics), Raquel Queirós (cycling), Miguel Nascimento (swimming), Francisco Belo (shot put), and Tomás Appleton (rugby) are some of the athletes who represented this initiative.
Location: Portugal
