Short Bio: The Portuguese Society of Pneumology purpose is to promote and protect the respiratory health of the Portuguese and to encourage education and professional qualification through the dissemination of all the subjects related to respiratory diseases. In particular, our Working Committee on Sleep Respiratory Pathology intends to inform the Portuguese people about the importance of sleep in general health and well-being.

Activity: Under the scope of this year’s World Sleep Day theme – Sleep Equity for Global Health – the Portuguese Society of Pneumology developed this year’s actions with the aim of disseminate the importance of adequate sleep to everyone as an essential pillar for health.

Therefore, it established a partnership with the Portuguese Association of Shopping Centers (Associação Portuguesa de Centros Comerciais – APCC) and organized different sessions, across the country, that were open to the population and in each one a pulmonologist informed the participants about the importance of sleep and about the main sleep disorders.

In the first place, we went to find out how the population sleeps and if they recognize the main sleep disorders through some interviews in the street in some of the bigger cities in Portugal. Here it is the result: https://youtu.be/Kq_9iuNinHo?feature=shared

Afterwards, realizing some of the main issues that existed, pulmonologists held the informative sessions in shopping centers. The result was published on our social media: https://youtu.be/33W0sR3ajkA?feature=shared

In addition to these sessions, the population’s awareness was also carried out through the presence in different Portuguese media, like some of the main TV channels.

We were also invited to participate in clarification sessions organized by the Lisbon city hall.

All of these actions were developed with the aim of ensuring greater equity in sleep among the population through the access to information and health literacy.
