Short Bio: The Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC) is a Research Institute committed to foster advanced biomedical research, high-quality multidisciplinary graduate teaching at the University of Coimbra (UC), and public engagement in science. Sleep research and awareness are highly relevant concerns for the institute.
The Portuguese Sleep Association (APS) joins professionals from many health, education and university groups in order to promote awareness, education and research related to sleep and sleep disorders in a multidisciplinary perspective and addressed to health professionals and scholars, professional and general population.

Activity: A large-scale campaign has been developed by the partners of this application, based on the slogan “Sleep is Essential for Health”. The campaign included the following initiatives:

1. A drawing exhibition, entitled “Sleep with conscience”, at the Northern Mother and Child Center of Santo António Hospital and University Center, in Porto, Portugal, during March 2023. The exhibition integrated a selection of drawings from students from primary to high schools about sleep hygiene, derived from a drawing contest that took place in 2021 in preparation for the World Sleep Day 2022.

2. A sleep awareness campaign on social media, during the week of March 10th to 17th, 2023, based on the creation of positive posts about the importance of sleep for health.
Metrics: 12.445 people were reached via Facebook and 2405 via Instagram.

3. The emission of an animation about sleep (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4utkFhHJAaY), produced by CNC-UC and APS, in waiting rooms of hospitals and health centers all across the country, during the week of March 13th to 17th, 2023.

4. The launch of the contest “Sleep is essential for health”, which challenges students from primary to high schools to write quatrains about the importance of sleep. Applications run between March 13th and April 30th, 2023.

5. A special edition of the Dr. Why quiz (https://drwhyquiz.com/?lang=en-GB), across the country, during the week of March 13th to 19th, 2023, with the integration of questions about sleep.
Metrics: 2648 players (662 teams) from 12 different districts of Portugal; 2690 people were reached via Facebook and 18.156 via Instagram.

6. A video-call with students from Cape Verde Islands, on the World Sleep Day 2023, to promote sleep literacy and answer questions of students about sleep and sleep disorders.
Attendants: 38 students from high school.

7. The premiere of the documentary “Apneia” (https://marioneteatro.com/en/productions/apneia) at Casa de Cinema de Coimbra, on the World Sleep Day 2023. “Apnea” was produced by the Marionet theater company, in collaboration with APS and CNC-UC, and intends to improve literacy on Obstructive Sleep Apnea, one of the most prevalent sleep disorders worldwide. It includes testimonials from patients, sleep technicians and clinicians. The premiere of the documentary was followed by a roundtable discussion between patients, sleep technicians, clinicians, sleep researchers, and the artistic direction of the documentary, with the moderation of the coordinator of the Science communication office of CNC-UC.
Audience: 108 people.

8. The launch of the game “SleepID” (https://baslrgames.com/en/sleep-id-en/), on March 18th, in FNAC store, at Forum Coimbra. “SleepID” was produced by CNC-UC, in collaboration with APS, and intends to teach about the importance of sleep and of the diagnosis of sleep disorders in a ludic and dynamic way. The game allows four to six players simultaneously, from age 12.

9. Media interviews (tv, radio and newspapers) about the importance of sleep.

APS and CNC-UC join forces every year to carry out a campaign in the context of the World Sleep Day with various activities in order to raise public awareness about the importance of sleep and its impact on health.

Location: All over Portugal – Continental area, Portuguese Islands (Madeira, Azores) and other countries with Portuguese population or Portuguese language (e.g. Cape Verde Islands).
