Short Bio: The Portuguese Society of Pneumology purpose is to promote and protect the respiratory health of the Portuguese and to encourage education and professional qualification through the dissemination of all the subjects related to respiratory diseases. In particular, our Working Committee on Sleep Respiratory Pathology intends to inform the Portuguese people about the importance of sleep in general health and well-being.

Activity: In 2018’s world sleep day the Portuguese Society of Pneumology has done a questionnaire to the population about sleep habits that revealed that the Portuguese do not sleep well.
The questionnaire was available online and we selected a sample of the 643 answers – Portuguese people aged 25 or more. The main results that can be highlighted are: 46% of Portuguese adults aged 25 or over sleep less than 6 hours a day, 21% say that they take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, 32% consider themselves to have poor sleep and 40% report difficulties in staying awake during driving and/or other daily activities.

This year, towards these results, the Portuguese Society of Pneumology, in order to highlight the message of the importance of a good sleep for a healthy life, developed a campaign which was present in different media. “Não deixe que a noite lhe estrague o dia” (do not let the night spoil your day) was the slogan of the campaign that included these activities:

• A press release with important info about the importance of sleep and with the highlights of the questionnaire – that resulted in more that 60 articles published;

• A tv spot with the most important data of the study – the tv spot was broadcasted on the television public channel
