Delegate: Simon Edmonds
Delegate Short Bio: Simon Edmonds is a Charge Clinical Physiologist in respiratory and sleep physiology at Starship Child Health in Auckland, New Zealand. He leads the paediatric sleep and respiratory physiology service and has a strong interest in advancing sleep medicine through clinical service development, technology integration, and education in New Zealand.

Activity: World Sleep Day 2026: Raising Awareness About the Importance of Sleep Health. To mark World Sleep Day, the Sleep Physiology teams took the opportunity to promote awareness of sleep health and sleep medicine across the hospital community.
Dr Syed Hussain photographed applying EEG electrodes as part of a polysomnography recording. The demonstration highlighted the technology used to measure brain activity, breathing, oxygen levels, and other physiological signals during sleep for both our Children’s Hospital and Adult Laboratory.
Charge Clinical Physiologist Simon Edmonds volunteered as the live demonstration participant, wearing a full portable sleep monitoring setup while speaking with staff and members of the public about sleep disorders and the benefits of diagnosis and treatment.
The setup included:
• Nox A1 sleep diagnostic system live streaming physiological data to a tablet
• SenTec TCOM+ monitoring device for transcutaneous CO₂ and oxygenation
• Masimo BLE PPG oximeter for pulse oximetry monitoring
• Demonstration of a ResMed Lumis ventilator as a treatment option for patients with sleep disordered breathing and hypoventilation conditions.
Throughout the day, Simon and Specialist Clinical Physiologist Karen Cunningham discussed common sleep conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea, the health consequences of untreated sleep disorders, and how modern sleep technology enables accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
World Sleep Day is a global initiative aimed at promoting the importance of healthy sleep and raising awareness about sleep disorders. The activity demystified sleep testing and highlight the work of sleep services in improving patient health and wellbeing at Auckland City and Starship Children’s Hospital.
