Scope of Activity: Individual activity
Activity: The primary objective of this initiative is to raise awareness about the critical link between artificial light at night (ALAN) and sleep health, advocating for “Healthy Lighting” strategies in urban redevelopment. As highlighted by recent research (Zielińska-Dąbrowska et al., Science 2023) and the first international consensus on indoor lighting (Brown et al., PLOS Biology 2022), our current “blue-rich” urban environments are disrupting the human circadian clock. This activity aims to translate these scientific milestones into actionable urban design principles for the community, emphasizing that protecting our natural dark-sky environment is a fundamental pillar of sleep medicine. To implement these goals, our association, Puli-AMO Messina, has launched a digital awareness campaign through specialized social media content, in which we have summarized the latest evidence linking light pollution to sleep disorders and circadian rhythm disruption. A central pillar of this campaign is educating the public on the “10 Lux” Rule, highlighting the 2022/2023 expert guidelines that recommend keeping evening light exposure below 10 lux to protect natural melatonin production and ensure healthy sleep onset. Furthermore, we are showcasing practical Urban Solutions through “Night-Safe” technologies to drastically reduce glare and skyglow and a community mapping project using LightPollutionMap.info.
