Delegate: Fiona Hauptman
Scope of Activity: Individual activity
Activity: Sleep plays a critical role in neurological regulation, emotional wellbeing, and developmental outcomes in children. As a pediatric occupational therapist and sleep specialist, my lecture will focus on the relationship between sleep and the sensory system in infants and young children.
This lecture aims to increase awareness among parents and professionals about how sensory processing, nervous system regulation, and environmental factors influence a child’s ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. I will discuss how sensory sensitivities, proprioceptive and vestibular needs, and autonomic nervous system activation can contribute to common pediatric sleep challenges.
The goal of this activity is to provide practical, evidence-informed strategies that help families and clinicians better understand children’s sleep behavior through a sensory and nervous system lens. By bridging sleep science with sensory integration principles, the lecture supports more effective and compassionate approaches to pediatric sleep support.
The audience will include parents, caregivers, early childhood professionals, and clinicians interested in improving sleep health in children. The broader aim is to promote healthier sleep habits, reduce stress around sleep, and support optimal development in the community.
