Nagar, Chennai to conduct the Sleep Awareness program for the general population, the employees and the students. Sleep is the foundation of Health and it maintain proper utilization of the nutrition, the physical activity and rejuvenate and prepare the organ system to function and prolong life without any or minimal ailments. In-spite of being an important area, its the most ignored component of health in many countries. In the present era of technology, all the age groups irrespective of the gender are sacrificing their sleep to stand in the race of everyday’s life that enforces to neglect the timing, quality and quantity of their sleep. Thus, the objective of the sleep awareness program conducted in our institution was to bring the awareness amongst the MBBS students who shall be ambassador of health in the future for better health of society.
The Sleep Awareness Week 2023 was announced in the Academic Calender 2023 of our institute from 13th March 2023 to 17th March 2023 . The target population involved in the awareness program were the adolecent and young age group between 17 years to 23 years MBBS students. The students are considered to be the most affected group due to their unhygienic sleep habits. The stress of competitions, qualification, peer stress, Video games, matches at the odd hours and hostel life, do not have any particuar time and pattern of sleep. We decided to inculcate some good sleep hygenic habits in them during our Sleep Awareness Week 2023.
We have selected this week because the World Sleep Day this year fall on 17th March 2023.The theme 2023 is SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTH. All following five days we had different activity to spark the awareness in students.

Day 1- Inaugural Program- Chief Guest- Dr. Rema Raghu, who is the CMO and General Physician of Buddhi Clinic that believes integrated approach and team work in lifestyle modification. Dr. Rema Raghu was welcomed and had given the students the words of wisdom on how to keep ourself healthy and how, sleep plays a very important role in our life. It was followed by MIME SHOW (enclosed the link) by two batches very appreciated by the guest and faculty calling the theme of the Sleep week to be need of the hour. The MIME show was also presented in the medical OPD Block amongst around 100 patients for awareness about quality and good duration sleep in our life. Besides by doing this, we have created a path and shown light to everyone that if we need to create awareness it should end up with attitudinal change.

Day 2: Debate competition- where we had two teams with mix of 1st and 2nd year MBBS batches. The topic given was IS SLEEP AN EPIDEMIC AMONGST THE TEENS? Both the proposition and opposition teams debated very well with their expression of views individually, buttle, rebuttal and summary round. They were judged by Dr. Manisha Mane, HoD Microbiology and Dr. Devidas Tondare, Professor, Community Medicine. The opposition won the battle leaving an impact with many questions in the audiences mind to explore further.

Day 3: Poster Presentation Competition-Topic: SLEEP PHYSIOLOGY, SLEEP HYGIENE, SLEEP DISORDER. Around 20 posters in the teams were displayed in the General OPD Area in New medical OPD Block and also in the 1st Floor of Medicine OPD. It was judged by Dr. Madhubala, HoD, Biochemistry and Dr. Anandhi Lakshmanan, Associate Professor, Microbiology. There was so much of exploration and explanation by the students for poster making that while making the poster for creating awareness by poster for IPs, they too were getting aware in an unnoticed way.
It was followed by afternoon session and talk exclusively for MBBS students by Dr. Tripat Deep Singh, International Sleep Specialist from Chandigarh and also the Course Director of Academy of Sleep Wake Science, who is in many advisory committees in setting up Sleep Clinic and Sleep Testing Laboratory in many Government and Non-government sectors across the world. The Sleep Specialist guest lecture appraised students on the Physiology of every organ system that function in altogether different way when we sleep. The role of Glymphatics that functions only when we fall asleep and never when we are awake. The increased prevalence of cancer, hypertension, Diabetes, stroke is due to hindering the toxin removal function of glymphatic that may lead to cancer. How various neurotransmitters when do not get released due to wakefulness ends up producing anxiety, seizers, dementia, suicidal attempts and person even ends up to death due to Alzheimer’s. It was an eyeopener session for many.
