Dr. Bharath Reddy and his team from the Shishuka Children’s Specialty Hospital recently gave a fascinating talk to students in grades 7-10 about the importance of sleep and its impact on memory, emotions, and long-term health. This talk was part of their efforts to raise awareness for World Sleep Day 2023.

The 20-minute presentation was tailored to the understanding of school-age children, and it included an interactive Q&A session that allowed the students to ask questions and engage with the material. The students were highly engaged and showed great interest in learning about the detrimental effects of poor sleep.

Talk in Ekya Schools, JP Nagar, BTM Layout and Byrathi, Bangalore

Dr. Narajun, a Pediatric Consultant at Shishuka Children’s Specialty Hospital, recently engaged wit students in grades 7-10 to discuss the importance of sleep as part of World Sleep Day 2023 celebrations. The topic of the discussion was “Sleep is Essential for Health.”

During the talk, the students learned about the physiology of sleep, including its importance for regulating memory, stress, behavior, and emotions both in the short-term and long-term. Dr. Nagarjun also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of getting adequate sleep during exam time to optimize performance.

The talk was informative and engaging, the students left with a newfound understanding of the critical role that sleep plays in their overall health and well-being. Painting Competition:

14-15th March 2023

To celebrate World Sleep Day 2023 and reinforce the importance of healthy sleep habits, children in grades 7-10 from CMR, NPS School, EKYA Schools in JP Nagar, BTM layout, and Byrathi were encouraged to participate in a painting competition. The theme of the competition was “Sleep is a pillar of human health.”

The competition drew fantastic response, with 250-300 participants from all four schools. The children submitted impressive paintings and artworks that showcased their understanding of the importance of good sleep habits.

The best two entries from each school were recognized with a certificate and trophy from Shishuka Children’s Hospital in association with the World Sleep Society. Essay Writing Competition (15th March, 2023) 

To promote the importance of healthy sleep habits, students in grades 7-10 from CMR, NPS School, EKYA Schools in JP Nagar, BTM layout, and Byrathi were invited to participate in an essay writing competition. The theme of the competition was “Sleep is a Pillar of Human Health: Why Sleep is Essential for our Well-being.”

The competition attracted a strong response from students, with many submitting well-crafted and thought-provoking essays. The participants demonstrated an impressive understanding of the physiology of sleep and the importance of good sleep habits for our physical and mental health.

The best two essays from each school were recognized with certificates and trophies from the organizers of the competition. The students who participated in the competition gained a deeper appreciation of the role that sleep plays in their lives and learned valuable lessons about how to cultivate healthy sleep habits.

It was inspiring to see young people engaging with important health topics and promoting the importance of healthy sleep habits. Study on Pre and Post Test for school children on importance of sleep (13th-15th March 2023) 

To assess the effectiveness of sleep education for school children, a pre- and post-test study was conducted among students in grades 7-10. The study was held in celebration of World Sleep Day 2023, with the aim of increasing awareness about the importance of good sleep habits.

Prior to a brief talk on sleep, the children were asked to complete a simple survey comprising ten questions related to sleep. The questions covered topics such as the physiology of sleep, the effects of sleep on memory and emotion regulation, and the consequences of sleep deprivation in adolescents.

Following the talk, the same set of questions was asked again to assess whether the students had gained a better understanding of the importance of sleep. The results of the study are currently being analyzed, and summary of he findings will be published once the analysis is complete.

This study is an important step in promoting healthy sleep habits among school children. By assessing the effectiveness of sleep education, we can gain a better understanding of how to effectively communicate the importance of sleep to young people.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Education of Nursing Students on Importance of sleep (16th March, 2023) 

On March 16th, 2023, nursing students from Bangalore City College came together for a group discussion on the importance of sleep in nursing health, in honor of World Sleep Day 2023. The students also showcased their creativity through charts and paintings related to the theme “Sleep is essential for health.” These works of art were displayed in the Shishuka Children’s Specialty Hospital for parents to view and learn about the importance of sleep during the week leading up to World Sleep Day.

During the event, the nursing students were briefed about the theme for World Sleep Day 2023. With their support, Dr. Bharath and his team put up flyers from the World Sleep Society of sleep research, which were hung throughout the hospital during World Sleep Month.

It was encouraging to see nursing students take an active role in promoting healthy sleep habits. By spreading awareness about the importance of sleep, they are helping to ensure that patients receive the best care possible.

 

 

Interaction with parents in Outpatient department (13th-18th March, 2023) 

In celebration of World Sleep Day 2023, Dr. Bharath Reddy and Dr. Nagarjun pediatric sleep specialists at Shishuka Children’s Hospital, took time during OPD visiting hours to discuss pediatric sleep and sleep disorders. Their aim was to raise awareness of the importance of sleep in children and encourage parents to be vigilant about detecting sleep disorders in their children.

In the week following World Sleep Day, the doctors continued their efforts by taking turns speaking for one minute about why “sleep is essential for health” in the patient waiting area during OPD hours. Shishuka Sleep Questionnaire Released on 17th March 2023: World Sleep Day

On March 17th, 2023, in celebration of World Sleep Day, Shishuka Children’s Specialty Hospital released their own Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire. The questionnaire was developed using references from established tools such as BISQ, PSQ, and the Child Sleep Habit Questionnaire.

As a hospital that specializes in pediatric sleep and disorders, we understand the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment. Our team of experienced doctors have been providing compassionate care for over 10 years, and we are constantly seeking ways to improve our serviced.

The Shishuka Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire was developed with both clinicians and parents in mind. It aims to provide as comprehensive assessment of a child’s sleep habits and identify any potential sleep disorders. However, further validation is required to ensure its effectiveness.

We hope that our Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire will be a valuable tool for clinicians and parents alike in promoting health sleep habits for children. By identifying any sleep disorders early on, we can help ensure that children receive the care they need for optimal health and well-being.

 

Educational Talk for Parents (18th March, 2023)

Dr. Bharath Reddy delivered a talk to parents at Shishuka Children’s Specialty Hospital as a part of World Sleep Day celebrations. The talk focused on the essential role of sleep in the health of children, and Dr. Reddy also provided guidance on how to establish healthy sleep routines for children.   1. Dr Maya Ramagopal – Why children need to sleep? (22nd March, 2023)

Shishuka Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Colorado, has been actively training pediatricians in the field of pediatric sleep medicine and offering a Diploma in Sleep Medicine (DPSM). So far, two successful batches have completed the 6-month course, and the third batch is currently underway.

To celebrate World Sleep Day 2023, the hospital recently hosted an online talk by Dr. Maya Ramagopal, a Pediatric Sleep Expert from Rutgers University. The audience comprised of alumni from the past two batches of DPSM and current DPSM candidates. Dr. Maya’s talk centered on “Why do Children Need to Sleep” and delved into the physiology of sleep, circadian rhythms, and homeostasis. as well as the effects of sleep deprivation with evidence based studies. She also discussed various sleep problems age-wise in school-age children, screen time recommendations for children, and the relationship of sleep and metabolic syndrome.

The session was an enthralling online Zoom event, with Dr. Maya as the speaker and Dr. Bharath serving as the moderator. Overall, the talk proved to be informative and educational, providing valuable insights into the importance of pediatric sleep medicine.

2. Dr Benjamin Hughes – Medical Management of OSA (30/03/2023)

As part of the World Sleep Day 2023 activities, DPSM Batch 3 candidates had the privilege of interacting with Dr. Benjamin Hughes, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics a the University of Colorado. Dr. Hughes shared his expertise on the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), specifically the medical management of the condition. He also took the opportunity to educate the aspirants about the pathophysiology of OSA.
