Short Bio: Kamalesh K Gulia is a passionate sleep scientist from India. Her interests are focused on neurophysiology of sleep, developmental neural plasticity, cognition and related aspects. In recent years, she has contributed to role of sleep during peri-natal developmental window (sleep deprivation during pregnancy and post-parturition effects in offspring) in shaping cognition and emotional behaviour in offspring. She also studies yogic intervention and herbal products for management of insomnia and circadian sleep disorders

14th World Sleep Day celebration was celebrated on 19 March 2021 in the Biomedical Technology Wing of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (India) in a hybrid mode. On this occasion, Dr Harikrishna Varma, Head of the Biomedical Technology Wing delivered the Inaugural Address and emphasised the importance of sleep for good health in current changing lifestyle especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Maya Nandkumar A, Head of the Department of Applied Biology chaired the session. Dr Maya mentioned that every year, World Sleep Day is meticulously organised by Dr Kamalesh K Gulia. It is an opportunity to everyone to understand more about sleep as it a basic physiological need and highlighted the role of sleep in developing better immune responses when COVID vaccinations are going on.

Dr Kamalesh K Gulia delivered special talk Sleep & Wellbeing: A Redefined Link! on the occasion. Dr Gulia described components of sleep, changing patterns during development, monophasic to polyphasic sleep, effects of sleep deprivation and common sleep disorders. She also described the principles of Sleep Hygiene and elucidated Ten Commandments of good sleep for both adults and children in elegant pictorial presentations. The World Sleep Day was organized by Dr Kamalesh K Gulia, Division of Sleep Research, DAB, BMT Wing.
