At Sparsh Chest Diseases centre, Ahmedabad,Gujarat, India we have a mission of eradication of sleepiness and sleeplessness which constitute a global epidemic that threatens health & quality of life. It is declared by World Association of Sleep Medicine that the disorders of sleep are preventable & treatable medical conditions. On the occasion of World Sleep day, 15th March, 2014, we have arranged a Lecture discussion with patient’s talk to bring about awareness of this less known amongst common people. About 100 people would participate in this programme.
World Sleep Day Celebration at Sparsh Chest Disease Center 2014
World sleep day was very enthusiastically celebrated by Sparsh Chest Disease Center in colobration with Morning Walker’s Club on very next morning of world sleep day at Law garden, very popular among morning walkers of the city. The celebration was started sharp at 7.00 am at the low garden with 70 walkers gather at the culture-amphitheater. Whole program was centered over sleep hygiene and heath, whole discussion was based on “Restful sleep, Easy breath & Health body” a slogan of the day and brief introduction of WASM & importance of sleep day celebration.
Dr. Varun Patel, Consultant sleep specialist was talked about normal sleep pattern; its importance in restoration of memory, body cell and strength. The discussion also included modern sleep deprived society, our bad habits, cost of restless sleep over individual health, culture, society, economy and the universe. Types of sleep disorder breathings starting from simple snoring to hypoventilation syndrome were included in discussion and people were participated extra enthusiastically. Diagnosis of sleep disorder including simply by history taking, reference of bed partner and daytime sleepiness questionnaires were explain. Surprisingly people were come out with many questions and queries about their sleeping habit. Dr. Brijesh Patel took opportunity for providing awareness of basic life support so people can save their near and dear’s life till advance facility available to the victim. Whole program including interactive session were lasted around 90 minutes.
Further continuation of the celebration with grand evening event was held at J B Auditorium Ahmedabad Management Association in association with Ahmedabad Medical Association & Ladies Club of AMA with 100 of participates at 6.00 pm. Renowned doctors of town, common people and patient who underwent for polysomnography and treated with various modality including CPAP and Auto-CPAP were main crowd. Welcome speech was delivered by Dr. Tushar Patel emphasizing need of world sleep day celebration and the need of expansion and strengthens of World Association of Sleep Medicine at local level. The theme of celebration was “Restful sleep, Easy breath & Health body” as decided by WASM. Dr. Gopal was nicely explained about obstructive sleep apnoea and its risk factors. Small and importance tips to tackle sleep related breathing disorder. The lecture was eye opener for the lay man regarding myths and reality of sleep and sleep hygiene. Dr. Krutika Kapadiya delivered talk over diet and yoga pertaining to weight reduction indirectly help full to treat OSA. There was extraordinary sharing at later part of evening by the OSA patients who are using Non Invasive Ventilation as part of treatment since long time really helping to gain confidence of person fear of diagnostic test and treatment.
Over all we get satisfactory feedback from the audience; and satisfy to be part of WASM in celebrating a day and pass the massage to the society; 1st step of its kind.
In 2013, the programme was at the Ahmedabad Management Association Hall. The crowd consisted of 100-120 people. There was general introduction about the importance of Good Sleep & what OSA is. Next session was the lecture by a dietician. And last segment consisted of the talk by patients on their own experience after using the C-Pap machine.
In 2012, it was our 1st year at our own hospital- Sparsh Chest Disease Centre. We kept the awareness programme. About 50-60 people were present. The Doctors team included a Pulmonologist, a Cardiologist & an ENT specialist.We introduced common people to our sleep clinic & to the C-Pap machine.
