In recognition of World Sleep Day 2025, the Antioquia ACMES Section is pleased to announce a series of initiatives centered around the theme “Make Sleep Health a Priority.” This campaign aims to elevate community awareness regarding the critical importance of prioritizing sleep health. The activities have been designed to educate the public on the significance of sleep hygiene in promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as providing guidance on recognizing and preventing common sleep disorders that affect the general population. It is estimated that the campaign has reached approximately 7,000 individuals so far. There is an aspiration to engage even more participants in the future, as the campaign materials are disseminated via social media.

ACTIVITIES:

1. “Marketing with You” Interview
Date: Tuesday, February 18th, 2025
Esteemed professionals in the field of sleep medicine, including Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist), Dr. Juan Esteban Vanegas (physician), and Bibiana Arias (respiratory therapist), offered valuable insights into how sufficient sleep enhances quality of life. The discussion covered essential topics such as the importance of sleep for overall health, the connection between chronic diseases and sleep, and established guidelines for maintaining optimal sleep hygiene.

2. “Radio Bolivariana” Interview
Date: Tuesday, February 25th, 2025
Respected specialists, including Bibiana Arias (respiratory therapist), Dr. Carlos Urzola (ENT specialist), and Danuta Gómez (physical therapist), engaged in a dialogue on the necessity of prioritizing sleep health. This discussion addressed critical subjects including the vital role of sleep in life, the correlation between chronic diseases and sleep, as well as recommended practices to ensure proper sleep hygiene.

3. “Your Health Guide” Podcast:
Date: Thursday, March 6th, 2025
A panel of experts, including Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist), Dr. Adriana Rojas, (neurologist), Dr. Gerardo Granados (pulmonologist), Dr. Patricia Pareja (ENT specialist), Francia Arboleda (speech therapist), Dr. José Vicente Vallejo (maxillofacial surgeon), and Dr. Hernán Marín (psychologist), responded to questions regarding the impact of sleep on health. They highlighted the therapeutic contributions of each professional, offering insights on healthy sleep tips, chronic diseases associated with sleep, and the interplay between breathing and sleep. Furthermore, they discussed maxillofacial surgery perspectives on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) management, cognitive behavioral therapy (TCC) for insomnia, and orofacial myology therapy (TMO) for OSA and snoring.

4. In-Person Conference at the Faculty of Microbiology, University of Antioquia:

Specialists in sleep medicine, including Dr. María Eugenia Toro (neurologist), Dr. María Isabel Montes (neurologist), Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist), Dr. Claudia Díaz (pulmonologist), Dr. Carlos Urzola (ENT specialist), and Dr. Hernán Marín (psychologist), conducted a comprehensive lecture on how prioritizing sleep can enhance health outcomes. The guided discussion focused on key topics such as the definition of sleep and its essential role in life, the effects of sleep deprivation on physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and the connections between chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea. Issues such as snoring and insomnia were also explored, alongside providing healthy sleep guidelines for university students and the general population.

They underscored the importance of sleep for well-being, chronic diseases, and the adoption of healthy sleep practices.

In this important program, Dr. María Isabel Montes (neurologist) and Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist) highlighted the significance of sleep for health, the connection between sleep and chronic diseases, and provided guidelines for healthy sleeping habits.

9. “TeleAntioquia News” Interview
Date: Friday, March 14th, 2025
During another recognized media outlet Dr. María Isabel Montes (neurologist) and Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist) were interviewed, on the TeleAntioquia news program. The interview focused on the commemoration of World Sleep Day provided statistics on the high incidence of insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea in the population and offered tips for improving sleep quality.

10. World Sleep Day Commemoration
Date: Saturday, March 15th, 2025
In observance of World Sleep Day, a luncheon was organized for members of the Antioquia ACMES Section. This event included a comprehensive report on the campaign and its impact in the population. Furthermore, a brainstorming session was held to propose activities for the subsequent year. Gifts donated by industry partners were distributed to all participants who engaged with the campaign. A total of 16 professionals attended the meeting.

11. In-Person Conference at the Canadian School
Date: Wednesday, March 19th, 2025
Experts in sleep medicine, including Dr. Amanda Rodríguez (ENT specialist) and Dr. Carlos Urzola (ENT specialist), Dr. Pablo Lema (psychiatrist), and Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist), provided valuable insights to Hight School students, as well as their teachers, on the importance of prioritizing sleep at various stages of life. They covered critical topics, including recommended sleep durations according to age, the significance of proper breathing during sleep, common sleep disorders in adolescence, and the connections between depression, insomnia, and healthy sleep practices.

A collaborative article authored by Dr. Natalia Colorado (dentist), Dr. Ana Carolina Sierra and Dr. Sara Lanau (neuro-pediatricians), Dr. Andrea Parra (pediatric pulmonologist) Dr. Patricia Pareja (ENT specialist), Dr. Eliana Rivera (speech therapist), Dr. Pablo Lema (psychiatrist) and Dr. Hernán Andrés Marín (psychologist) addressed several important topics. These include the significance of sleep for overall health, strategies for achieving healthy sleep, the recommended duration of sleep by age, the impact of vaping on sleep quality, social jet lag among adolescents, the effects of oral breathing and snoring, the influence of orofacial myofunctional therapy on sleep quality, and the relationship between depression and insomnia, alongside recommendations for healthy sleep habits for families.

13. Photo and Flag: A Historic Moment
To conclude the campaign, symbolic photographs were collected featuring members of the Antioquia ACMES Section, who donned World Sleep Day T-shirts and buttons to underscore our commitment to this year’s mission: ” LET US PUT ON THE T-SHIRT AND DECLARE: “MAKE SLEEP HEALTH A PRIORITY!”
