The Chinese Sleep Research Society (CSRS), as the unique national-level academic organization in China dedicated to the field of sleep medicine, participated in 2024 World Sleep Day, which was introduced to China before twenty-one years. The theme chosen for China was “Healthy Sleep for All,” translated from the World Sleep Day’s theme, aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of healthy sleep, providing scientific knowledge about achieving proper sleep, and promoting overall sleep health.
On March 16, 2024, the “2024 World Sleep Day China Theme Launch Ceremony of 2024 World Sleep Day and National Large-scale Science Popularization Activity Launch Ceremony” took place at the Beijing Science and Technology Hall, the official venue of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology. Professor Zhi-li Huang from Fudan University, as Chairman of the CSRS, announced the theme for China as “Healthy Sleep for All.” Moreover, Professor Qiong Ou from Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, provided a detailed interpretation of the theme.
During the event, a series of sleep survey data were released, including the “2024 China Resident Sleep Health White Paper” obtained through wearable devices and urban sleep health data obtained through questionnaire surveys. The launch of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) standardization training was initiated. Solutions for sleep improvement based on smart wearables and smart beds were introduced.
While hosting the national launch ceremony of a large-scale science popularization event at the main venue, various regions of China concurrently organized diverse forms of promotional activities, which lasted for half a month. The main venue was connected on-line to three branch venues in Shanghai, Guizhou, and Chongqing, where experts and healthcare professionals interacted with attendees. This national science popularization activity ignited enthusiasm among sleep-related medical personnel, scientists, and industry professionals across China. Chinese experts utilized local resources to conduct activities such as hospital consultations, lectures, community surveys, and education campaigns, or participated in interviews and programs on local radio, television, and the internet to promote the concept of healthy sleep to the public. Furthermore, Academic forums and lectures on sleep were organized to facilitate interdisciplinary medical education on sleep medicine. In addition, in ten southern provinces and cities, a Sleep Culture Festival was even established, now in its fourth year. During the 2024 World Sleep Day period, more than 30 medical consultations and science popularization events were held in over 25 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly reaching approximately one million people, with an online coverage of over 100 million.
Chinese media are very close to 2024 World Sleep Day China Theme Launch Ceremony, so nearly 50 Chinese mainstream media journalists attended the home event. During the Q&A session, experts from the Chinese Sleep Research Association answered questions from journalists on sleep and health topics that were of public interest.
At the themed conference in China, the Chinese Sleep Research Association also invited experts and media professionals in the fields of sports and nutrition for face-to-face interviews to collectively delve into the significance of sleep as one of the three pillars of health.
