Activity:
The Sleep and Non-Invasive Ventilation Section of the Romanian Society of Pneumology brings cognizance to the many burdens of sleep problems, taking efforts toward prevention and management of sleep disorders. This year’s activities include social media campaigns and TV interviews with sleep specialists who raise awareness on driver fatigue and road safety, as well as other sleep related health issues.

The awareness campaign in Romania (February 15-March 20, 2017) had the following objectives:
– To inform the public about the importance of sleep for the individual’s health and well-being
– To raise awareness on the dangers associated with sleep disorders such as sleep apnea
– To inform the population as to the necessity of treatment on symptom onset

A dedicated Facebook page was created, www.facebook.com/WorldSleepDayRomania, were information about sleep issues was posted regularly for over a month.
Press releases and various appearances on local TV stations where specialists discussed sleep hygiene were also part of the communication plan. Another important message was “Say NO to Driver Fatigue” (“Stop Somnolenta la Volan”), a campaign aimed at drivers, both professional and amateur, under the slogan “Road Safety Starts After a Good Nap” (“Siguranta pe drum incepe dupa un somn bun”). The ambassador of the campaign was Titi Aur, a legendary Romanian rally champion and Founder of Defensive driving school. In Romania, an estimated number of 550.000 adults have sleep apnea, while 10 to 20% of professional drivers have fallen asleep while driving.
