We’ve managed to engage colleges from our society in interviews on national TV and radio shows, medical websites and printed newspapers. Our activities even entered the News at prime time of national TV media.

15th March – Bulgarian Telegraphic Agency

Activity: Press-conference on the topic “To fall asleep at the wheel – sleepiness as a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders”

We organized a joint press conference of sleep specialists from the Bulgarian Society of Somnology, experts in automobile affairs from the Bulgarian Association of Victims in Car Accidents and the Union of Autoservice of Sofia, and patients from patient groups “Together with you”. Journalists were invited to the press-conference to reach mass media representation. For the purpose of our topic we’ve contacted Ministry of Internal Affairs for an official note regarding the problem about automobile accidents on the road in Bulgaria, rate of accidents due to sleepiness at the wheel and possible and undertaken counter measures. We’ve presented the note to the media. An interactive video with TV news about drivers that have slept at the wheel and caused injuries and death in the last few years was shown. We presented information about the rate of different sleep disorders causing excessive daytime sleepiness and representing risk for drivers on the road, legal measures undertaken so far and legal measures needed to be taken in near future in order to reduce the car accidents due to pathologic sleepiness, information about the European Union Directive 2014/84/EU, etc. An official statement of the Bulgarian Society of Somnology regarding the problem was spread out to the State institutions.

Activity: “The dream catcher” – sleep awareness campaign

Dreams are the most intimate part of the human consciousness. People are not used to share their dreams with others, because they often believe that no one is interested in things they dream: the dream is something unreal that have not really happened and does not represent an interesting information for the others. We do not talk usually about our dreams the way we do not talk usually about our sleep – just no one cares. “The dream catcher” was an activity aiming to show the interest of medicine in ordinary people’s sleep and make people think about their own sleep, something they don’t usually do in their everyday life. During this activity Dr. Petar Chipev was “selling” dream catchers at a famous market-place in Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria). The cost of one dream catcher was “one dream”. The people that wanted to “buy” a dream catcher had to tell a recent or past dream to the doctor on the market stall. That way we made them give a thought about their sleep. People that stopped at our stall also received a little pamphlet with information about what’s normal and abnormal in sleep.
